Timeshare & Travel Club Presentations: Don’t Fall for the Trade-In Trap
If you’re heading to a travel club or timeshare presentation, you’re likely excited by the promise of great deals, luxury vacations, or free perks. While many presentations are legitimate, it’s important to be aware of red flags—especially when it comes to “trade-in” offers or resale promises for your current timeshare.
Red Flag #1: “We’ll Sell Your Timeshare for You”
One of the most misleading tactics we’ve seen is when companies claim:
-
Your timeshare has high resale value
-
They’ll sell it quickly and easily
-
You’ll receive a return on investment or a cash payout
-
You just need to pay an upfront fee or talk to a “broker” during the presentation
These strategies are often used to pressure you into buying something new. In reality, timeshare resale markets are limited, and very few resales result in profit.
Red Flag #2: “You Can Use Your Equity to Upgrade Outside Your Brand”
Unless you are working with a legitimate company like Marriott, Hilton, or Wyndham, your existing timeshare equity cannot be transferred to another brand.
For example:
-
Marriott equity cannot be applied to a new Hilton ownership.
-
If a salesperson tells you otherwise, proceed with extreme caution.
These claims are often used to justify a new purchase and can leave you with two obligations—your original and the new one.
